Manel Torres and Samar Singh Jodha at TEDxVienna 2013

It’s time to introduce two more inspiring individuals who are going to speak at TEDxVienna Unlimited 2013. Both true visionaries, they are working different methods in changing both people and the world day by day.

Manel Torres’ Spray-On Fabric

The fashion industry is often somewhat belittled by people. They create unwearable trends, they are responsible for a worldwide unhealthy body image and all they ever think about is clothes, shoes and handbags. And while some of these allegations might have a true ring to them, the global fashion industry on the hand is also responsible for over 4 million jobs and more than $1 trillion revenue worldwide.

Coming up with an innovation in the fashion industry can therefore be quite a game-changer – which is the case with Manel Torres’ spray-on fabric. Aware of the slow process of constructing garments, Torres investigated novel ways to speed things up. His foresight and vision led him to think of developing a material that would almost magically fit the body like a second skin and at the same time have the appearance of clothing.

The product was developed through interdisciplinary research, linking the subjects of engineering, material science and design.  By creating a liquid suspension which is then sprayed by use of either a spray gun or an aerosol can, the fabric is formed by the cross-linking of fibres which adhere to create an instant non-woven fabric that can be easily sprayed on to any surface. While originally the concept was to be utilized mainly in the fashion industry, it has the potential to revolutionize numerous market sectors such as medical, automotive and design.

Samar Singh Jodha’s OUTPOST

Samar Singh Jodha is celebrated Indian photographer and installation artist who over the last twenty years, has been using photography and film to address various issues like development, human rights and conservation. His work has shown in galleries and museums worldwide. At the core of his projects is an involvement at a community level – which includes capacity building issues such as education, rural forestry programs and the revival of traditional craftsmanship. Standing out among his projects is his eight-year long project on ageing in India, which remains the single biggest social communication project in terms of outputs and outreach.

His current project OUTPOST is a visual disquisition on spontaneous individual expression in a rapidly homogenizing global culture. Jodha deploys a pictorial trope of discarded containers fashioned into habitat by miners in India’s pristine northeast.
